I have two 1 oz $50 Gold St. Gaudens coins that I need to sell due to a family emergency. I have never dealt with this before and need to know how to go about selling them.

The treasury website offers 1oz gold coins for sale.
Gold dealers tell me that the treasury sells only something called “proof” coins which are more expensive.
Can anyone help with this confusion?
